For most of modern history, belonging has been treated as an inheritance — a birthright of language, land, and lineage. That assumption is now colliding with the way people actually live: across borders, across generations, across identities.

The urgent question is not whether belonging is changing, but whether we can consciously build it. What rituals, institutions, and shared stories does a plural society need to make strangers feel like neighbours — without demanding that anyone erase who they are to be included?

Who changes more through migration: those who arrive, or those who receive them?

Migration is usually framed as something that happens to receiving societies. In truth, it changes everyone — and the change is the point.

The dominant story treats newcomers as the variable to be managed and the receiving society as the fixed frame. But the arrival of new people has always transformed the places that receive them: their food, their economies, their politics, their sense of self.

The question is not how to minimise that transformation, but how to move through it honestly — with the maturity to name what is being gained and lost on all sides.

If migration is inevitable, what kind of society does it ask us to become?

The 21st century will be defined by movement. The societies that thrive will be the ones that treat that as a design brief, not a crisis.

Demography, climate, and opportunity all point in the same direction: people will keep moving, and Europe in particular will keep receiving them. The choice is not whether — it is what kind of society we build in response.

That means rethinking education, work, citizenship, and civic life around a simple premise: our future is a common one, and we will have to design institutions worthy of it.

What happens when climate changes faster than our borders do?

Climate displacement is not a future scenario. It is already redrawing the map — and our legal frameworks are almost silent on it.

The Refugee Convention was written for a different century. It offers protection to those fleeing persecution, but has little to say to people whose homes are being made unliveable by drought, flood, or fire.

The next generation of international governance will have to name climate mobility for what it is — and decide whether we meet it with imagination or with walls.

Will AI make human mobility less important — or more?

The technologies reshaping work are also reshaping who needs to move, who wants to, and who is allowed to.

One story says remote work and AI will let talent stay put — that geography will matter less. Another says the opposite: as machines take on more work, human presence, care, and craft will become the scarce commodity, and the places able to attract people will win the century.

Both stories will be true at once. The question is which societies build the policies to benefit from either.

Can institutions designed for another century meet the challenges of this one?

Our democracies were built for slower change and more homogeneous publics than the ones we now inhabit.

Parliaments, ministries, and international bodies were designed in a world of clearer borders, longer timelines, and narrower publics. They are now being asked to govern climate, migration, technology, and identity — often all at once, often in real time.

Renewing democracy is not about replacing its parts. It is about turning the pieces we have — like a Rubik's cube — until the whole thing lines up with the century we actually live in.

Who gets to belong to Europe's next chapter?

Europe is at a hinge moment. What it decides about belonging will define whether it remains a project worth joining.

Europe was built on an act of political imagination: that former enemies could become citizens of a shared future. That imagination is now being tested by migration, populism, and geopolitical pressure from every direction.

The next European chapter will be written by whether the Union can extend its founding move — from reconciliation between old nations to inclusion of new neighbours — or whether it retreats into a smaller, more anxious version of itself.

How does migration shape the economy we share — and who gets to participate in it?

Migration is not separate from the economy. It is part of it — labour, entrepreneurship, remittances, care, and the tax base that funds the future.

The economic story of migration is usually told as a cost: pressure on wages, public services, and housing. But the fuller picture includes the jobs that go unfilled, the businesses started by newcomers, the care work that keeps societies functioning, and the innovation that comes from people who have crossed borders to build something new.

The question is not whether migration has an economic impact. It does. The question is whether we design the economy so that impact is shared — so that movement becomes a source of common prosperity rather than a wedge between those who belong and those who are made to feel they never will.
